Choosing Satisfaction

After just three days of graduate school, Dan felt as if he had been wandering in the desert for forty years. He was physically and intellectually exhausted, didn’t know if he was equipped to complete the journey ahead, and wasn’t even sure he belonged with this tribe. It was then, one morning at the University of Pennsylvania, that the heavens parted and the angel Barry descended upon him. The angel Barry (better known as legendary Swarthmore professor, author of the marvelous Paradox of Choice, and TED Talker Barry Schwartz) came to Dan and his tribe and spoketh to him two words that would change his experience in school and life.

In what could well have been carved on stone tablets, the angel Barry saideth: “And lo, you will have many choices in life, and you shall have but two ways of making these choices: thou shalt maximize or thou shalt satisfice. There is a time for both, but when thou dost satisfice more often, thou shalt find greater well-being.”

Even though this message was delivered far less biblically and in a distinctive Brooklyn accent by a guy wearing shorts and slumpy socks, Dan did thus realize that he had been maximizing too often, and he changed his ways to become a satisficer.

And it was good.

Probably, though, you still wonder what maximizing and satisficing are.

That is good, too. A curious mind is a beautiful thing, and we are about to satisfice your curiosity, for maximizing and satisficing are essential to understand when it comes to managing (and making the most of) the overwhelming nature of choice.
